The 21-year-old has been on fire since joining Russell Martin's Rangers side

Of all the players who have moved on from Sheffield Wednesday this summer so far, Djeidi Gassama is the player who arguably hurt Owls fans the most.

So far, Gassama has been the only departure in which Sheffield Wednesday have recouped a fee, selling him for £2.2 million to Russell Martin's Rangers.

The former PSG academy winger showed in glimpses last season that he would go on to become an elite wide man in his career, taking over games at times, despite his age, scoring seven and assisting one in the 2024/25 campaign.

And the 21-year-old has wasted no time in proving himself on the biggest stages too, during his short stint so far at his new club, almost forcing his way into Martin's plans due to some incredible performances in the UEFA Champions League qualifying phases.

After coming off the bench and scoring in both legs against Panathinikos, Gassama started his first game in the Champions League against Viktoria Plzen, scoring a brace as Rangers won 3-0.

All Wednesday fans can do is sit back and watch their former star grow into the player they all knew he'd become.

After Gassama bagged his first of the evening against Viktoria Plzen, BBC Sheffield's Rob Staton took to X to highlight his performance.

The main focus of the tweet was to highlight how the £2.2 million Wednesday got for his services was "nowhere near what he was worth" and that it's a "painful consequence" of the club's pressing financial issues.

Wednesday fans in the replies commented on how much of a blow this is.

"I think this is the one that stings the most," wrote one fan. "What a player Rob. Absolutely gutted," wrote another.

Other Owls fans are just trying to forget that any of this is happening, as the situation surrounding their club grows bleaker and bleaker.

"I think we should just try and pretend he doesn't exist, and this is all a blur," and "just stop mentioning it, now" were among the replies, indicating that Wednesday fans knew that this explosion of talent was going to come soon, and the fact that it's happened this way just adds salt to the open wound that is the football club as a whole.

A few commented on his and his side's lacklustre performance in the SPL opener against Motherwell, but if the 21-year-old can continue turning heads due to his outbursts in the Champions League, one or two poor outings in the domestic league can easily be overlooked.

Djeidi Gassama's goalscoring exploits compound Sheffield Wednesday's woes

With their 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen, Rangers have one foot in the door of the play-off round in the Champions League qualifiers.

A win in that final round will secure a place in the group phase of Europe's biggest competition, but Rangers will go into it with a safety barrier of already qualifying for the Europa League, which will also be the case if they throw away their healthy first-leg lead in the Czech Republic.

Gassama has arguably already paid back the minimal fee Rangers parted with to bring him to Ibrox, and will get a tiny bit of happiness that they were able to benefit from the dire situation happening at Hillsborough.

Ultimately, though, all football fans want a resolution, and quickly. For now, all Wednesday fans can do is sit and hope for change as they reluctantly watch their former players kick on at their new clubs.
