Tottenham Hotspur cruised to a dominant 5-0 victory over Southampton last weekend, easing the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou.
One player who shone brightest on the south coast was Heung-min Son, who delivered a sensational first-half performance that had former Newcastle United star Alan Shearer in awe.
The South Korean forward scored and registered two assists, directly contributing to all five Spurs goals – a remarkable feat.
His assists for Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison helped Spurs achieve a Premier League first – five goals in a single half.
Son’s performance was historic in more ways than one. His assist for Maddison’s goal just before the break was his 68th Premier League assist for Tottenham, overtaking Darren Anderton to become the club’s all-time leader in that department.
Shearer, a clinical striker during his own career, was thoroughly impressed by Son’s brilliance.
He said (via PremierLeague.com): “Scored one goal and set up two more, and that was just in the first half! He was unplayable for those 45 minutes before being taken off at the break.”
Son’s numbers at St Mary’s were astonishing, especially considering they were achieved in just 45 minutes.
His direct contribution to all five of Spurs’ goals made it a day to remember for both the player and the team.
Despite taking all three points from the Saints, Tottenham are tenth in the Premier League, five points away from Nottingham Forest in fourth.
