Roma twice clawed their way back into the game with Matias Soulé and Artem Dovbyk, but Verona kept pushing and secured a huge 3-2 victory with Abdou Harroui.

The Giallorossi scraped a 1-0 win over Torino midweek to save Ivan Juric’s job, but the tension was still sky high. Mario Hermoso and Alexis Saelemaekers were out injured, with Dovbyk returning to the starting XI. Hellas lost three on the bounce, with Jackson Tchatchoua and Reda Belahyane suspended after their red cards against Lecce, plus Pawel Dawidowicz, Martin Frese and Juan Manuel Cruz sidelined.

Nicola Zalewski had the ball in the net after 12 minutes with a wonderful control, cut inside and curler into the far bottom corner, but it was irrelevant as he was offside when gathering the long ball over the top.

Moments later, Zalewski went from hero to zero, as his horrible cross-field pass was intercepted by Casper Tengstedt, able to go clear on goal and give Verona the lead against the run of play.

Zalewski did correctly time his run on the Enzo Le Fee through ball to test Lorenzo Montipò at the near post, only for Matias Soulé to blast the rebound over from 12 yards.

Roma did get their equaliser in style, as Lorenzo Pellegrini’s effort was charged down, but Zalewski rolled it back in from the left and Soulé anticipated the defender to flick it in with his heel from close range.

Zeki Celik and Zalewski didn’t make the most of another smart Soulé through ball, but Tengstedt saw his angled drive deflected inches past the far post. On the resulting Ondrej Duda in-swinging corner, Verona restored their advantage with Giangiacomo Magnani’s glancing header at the near post. Roma protested that Evan Ndicka was caught on the nose, but it was not an unnatural movement from Magnani.

Roma got themselves back on level terms after the restart, as Celik rolled across from the right for Dovbyk to bundle over the line from close range, in conjunction with Magnani.

Duda tried to lob Mile Svilar from midfield and wasn’t far off, then almost curled in directly from the corner flag, forcing a tough save from Svilar, while substitute Paulo Dybala skimmed the near top corner with a free kick from the edge of the area.

Roma had a huge opportunity when Stephan El Shaarawy pulled back from the by-line for Dybala to tap in from six yards, but a trio of Verona defenders combined to clear off the line with difficulty.

Instead, Verona took the lead for the third time this evening. Fresh legs off the bench made the difference, as Livramento shrugged Ndicka off the ball and rolled across for Abdou Harroui to take a touch and sweep in from 13 yards.

It still wasn’t over, as Montipò got down for a desperate one-handed save to deny the Dybala snooker shot. Verona received their third red card in two games, as Livramento flung himself with both legs at El Shaarawy and was sent off.
