Former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, now playing for Mexican side Monterrey, faced the media ahead of his team’s FIFA Club World Cup opener against Inter Milan.
Unsurprisingly, the veteran defender was asked several questions about his former club, including one that sparked plenty of debate – Kylian Mbappe’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
While many believe Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele is the leading candidate for this year’s award, Mbappe also has a strong case.
The French forward scored over 40 goals during the 2024/25 season and once again showed why he is among the best in the world.
When asked if Mbappe deserves the Ballon d’Or, Ramos gave a clear answer: “Mbappe Ballon d’Or? For me, it’s clear.
“He won the Pichichi and the Golden Boot, but Real Madrid didn’t win other titles like other teams.”

Ramos pointed out that while team trophies often influence voting, the Ballon d’Or is still meant to honour the best individual.
In his view, Mbappe’s goal tally and consistent performances make him the most deserving, regardless of how Real Madrid or any other club finished the season.
“These are individual awards, but there are players who won the league and cups… If it were up to me, Mbappe would have won four or five Ballon d’Ors.”
Meanwhile, the veteran defender was also asked about Franco Mastantuono, the young Argentine midfielder recently signed by Real Madrid from River Plate.
Ramos admitted he hasn’t watched the teenager closely, but he is aware of the buzz.
“I don’t follow him, but I have heard he is showing a lot of potential. I wish him the best; it is the best place to see if he can make it big at Real Madrid,” noted the former captain.
