Former Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto made an emotional return to the club as a Como player during the Joan Gamper Trophy.

It was the first time he had faced his former club since leaving in 2024, and while Como fell to a 5-0 defeat, the night was filled with warm memories for the 33-year-old.

Roberto, who spent his entire career at Barcelona before departing last year, was substituted in the 70th minute.

As he left the pitch, the entire stadium stood to give him a heartfelt ovation, a fitting tribute to his years of service to the club.

Speaking after the game, Roberto was open about how special the night was for him. “I was very excited to be able to see my old teammates again and return home,” he said.

“To be able to say goodbye like this, with those chants and with the support of the people, has been a very nice moment for me. Very happy.”

Praise for former teammates

Roberto also shared his thoughts on Barcelona’s current style of play under Hansi Flick. “It’s a very direct, dynamic Barça. They smell blood and kill you,” he observed, recognising the attacking sharpness of the team he once led.

The veteran defender was also full of admiration for young star Lamine Yamal. “Lamine? There are no words. We’ve tried with help, but when he’s inspired, he is very difficult to stop,” he admitted.

Reflecting on his deep connection with the club, Roberto added, “Barça is the club of my life.”

Furthermore, he also shared his two cents on Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s situation at the club, stating, “Mats is a great friend. I celebrate that it is fixed, and I wish both of them the best.”

For Roberto, the match was more than just a pre-season fixture, as it was a farewell full of gratitude, respect, and lasting affection for the club he will always call home.
