Scott McKenna’s stint in the Euros shop window ended last night as Scotland were beaten by Hungary. The central defender started as part of a central trio at the back for Steve Clarke’s side but was helpless as the Scots lost in injury time. The 27-year-old was solid and showed some of the defensive qualities that could entice Brendan Rodgers to make a move.

McKenna is available as a free agent after being released by Nottingham Forest at the end of his contract, which was expected after he made the temporary switch to Copenhagen. Earlier in the camp, McKenna admitted that he would be open to making a move to Celtic.

“That is just natural when you have got teams the size of Celtic and Rangers. I know a lot of people who support both teams, so it is going to happen. They are going to question you, but there is nothing to tell.

“I’m without a club, so I think I would need to consider anything. There is nothing as of now, so there is nothing to think about. For me, that is completely on the back burner – I just have to do everything I can in training to try and get whatever minutes I can on the pitch here. Anything after that will take care of itself.

“There is no bigger stage if you are on the pitch to put you in the shop window. I can only do that by first and foremost training well and trying to get in the manager’s thoughts. To be honest, I am open to anything. I would never rule anything out.”

Celtic will be looking to strengthen at centre back this summer and add competition for Liam Scales, who has become the first pick alongside stalwart Cameron Carter-Vickers. There is the added benefit of having a home-grown, Scottish Internationalist in the ranks for the UEFA Champions League quota. Carl Starfelt has been linked with a return from Celta Vigo after swapping Glasgow to Spain. Although, the move didn’t pan out as the defender hoped. Starfelt would likely be preferred as he is a known quantity and was good with the ball at his feet; however, it is clear that McKenna would be an assured option.

McKenna was rated by Brendan during his first spell at the club and speculation of a move to Celtic has followed him throughout his career. It will be interesting to see whether anything transpires with McKenna and a move to Celtic.
