It has been clear for a while that Thomas Tuchel will probably not go down in the history books as the most successful Bayern coach of all time. However, these statistics now show just how bad his record actually is.
The 2:3 away defeat in Heidenheim once again made it clear how difficult Thomas Tuchel is finding it to reach the team. In terms of the number of defeats, he is actually the worst Bayern coach in over three decades.
His predecessor in this sad statistic comes from Denmark: In October 1991, Søren Lerby took over the coaching position from Erich Ribbeck, which he passed on to the current club legend Jupp Heynckes just six months later in March 1992. The reason? A disastrous record of 41.2 per cent defeats.
However, Tuchel’s record is not quite as bad as Lerby’s 40 per cent. „Only“ 25.2 per cent of Bayern games in which he was on the bench were lost. Nevertheless, in more than 30 years there has never been a Bayern coach with such a disastrous record.
After the Heidenheim defeat, sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Steffen Freund were of course immediately asked about the next steps for coach Tuchel. However, both categorically rejected a premature dismissal. Eberl had no thoughts in this direction and added that it was not always just a coaching problem.
Freund also answered the question about a job guarantee for Tuchel with „Yes, 100 per cent!“ His assessment of Tuchel’s work was: „Thomas tries everything to get the energy in. Of course, he also scrutinises himself: What can be changed? What’s the problem? Everyone has to work on that themselves.“
