Manchester United might be looking forward to a Europa League final, but their domestic form under Ruben Amorim is actually slightly worse than the worst ever Premier League team.

Stats from Opta Joe show that Amorim is currently averaging 0.92 points per game for Man Utd after last night’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Remarkably, this is actually lower than the 0.94 points per game Paul Jewell managed when he was in charge of Derby County back in 2007/08.

See below for the comparison, as posted by Opta on their official account on X, formerly Twitter…

0.92 – Ruben Amorim has won 24 points in 26 Premier League games, a points per game ratio of 0.92. This is lower than Paul Jewell's Premier League points per game (0.94), who managed 24 winless games at Derby when they finished on 11 points in 2007-08. United are safe from relegation as all three promoted sides have already been confirmed as going straight back down, but these numbers can’t be seen as anything other than hugely alarming.

Amorim arrived with a big reputation and huge money has been invested in this squad, so they really shouldn’t be doing worse than a Derby side that achieved the lowest ever points total in a Premier League campaign.

Can Ruben Amorim turn things around at Manchester United?

Amorim inherited a difficult job at Old Trafford, but fans will still have expected better than this from the former Sporting Lisbon manager.

Even under Erik ten Hag, things were not quite this bad, with the team at least still managing to finish in the top half of the table under the Dutch tactician last season.

It was always going to take time for Amorim to implement his ideas, but this is getting a bit ridiculous now.

Amorim now surely needs to win the upcoming Europa League final against Tottenham to save this season, and perhaps even his job.

The Portuguese tactician might already be in trouble after such dire performances in the Premier League, so a trophy is an absolute must.

Still, MUFC would also qualify for the Champions League with a win over Spurs and it’s hard to see how this team could possibly cope at that level next season.
