Ruben Amorim says he does not want Kobbie Mainoo to leave Manchester United after the midfielder submitted a transfer request.
The 20-year-old reportedly told the club this week that he wants to go out on loan to gain gametime ahead of next year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup in North America.
Mainoo started in Man Utd‘s shock midweek defeat on penalties to Grimsby Town in the League Cup, but has not played a single minute of their opening two Premier League matches.
Amorim has told Mainoo, who is contracted to the Red Devils until 2027, that he is competing with Bruno Fernandes for a spot in midfield.
Despite the player’s plea for a temporary move elsewhere, the club have told him that he will be staying put. Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs linked with the youngster.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Burnley at Old Trafford, Amorim says that he wants Mainoo to stay and fight for his place in the team.
“Until it’s official, I cannot say much,” he responded when asked about the futures of Maino and Alejandro Garnacho, who is set to join Chelsea for £40 million.
“I want Kobbie to stay. He needs to fight for his place, and we need Kobbie. So that is not going to change. The rest I don’t know how it’s going to finish.
“I understand that the players that are not playing in this moment are disappointed. But everyone will have the same opportunity to play. You have to fight during the week.”
