Premier League Giants Circle as Roma Struggle to Keep Svilar

Svilar’s Contract Talks Collapse Amid Premier League Interest

Mile Svilar has quietly become one of the most talked-about names on the summer transfer radar, with Manchester United and Chelsea both keeping tabs on the 25-year-old Roma goalkeeper. As contract negotiations between Svilar and Roma have stalled, multiple European clubs have begun exploring the possibility of signing the Serbian international.

According to CaughtOffside, “Man United are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, and Svilar is one of the names they admire, while Chelsea have also considered him.” The piece goes on to state that while Chelsea remain focused on AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, Svilar’s situation could give other suitors, United included, an opening.

Roma’s inability to meet Svilar’s contract expectations has made matters more complicated for the Italian side. “The 25-year-old is seeking a deal worth around €3.5m a year, but the Serie A giants have come up some way short of that, as they won’t go above €1.6m a year.” In an increasingly inflated market, that gap could spell the end of Svilar’s time at the Stadio Olimpico.

United’s Goalkeeper Dilemma

United’s need for a new goalkeeper is hardly a surprise. André Onana’s debut season at Old Trafford was one riddled with inconsistencies and costly mistakes. It is no wonder that the club are looking at alternatives.

CaughtOffside reports that “Svilar looks a solid option for United in goal, and it would be hard to do much worse than Andre Onana at Old Trafford.” A harsh line, but one echoed by many inside and outside the fanbase. What United must decide now is whether Svilar represents a short-term fix or a long-term solution.

Chelsea’s Dual Focus in Goalkeeper Search

While Chelsea are among those monitoring Svilar, their attention seems fixed more intently on Mike Maignan. It’s a reflection of the Blues’ recent transfer behaviour, often ambitious, occasionally erratic. Svilar might be a backup option for them, but with Maignan commanding a hefty fee and strong competition, their pursuit is far from straightforward.

CaughtOffside adds that “Chelsea have also considered him,” but at this stage, United’s relative urgency and Chelsea’s scattergun approach might give the Red Devils a clearer path forward.

Price Tag and Competition

The competition for Svilar’s signature is not limited to England. Manchester City, Newcastle, Bayern Munich and Monaco are all reportedly monitoring the situation, highlighting the keeper’s rising reputation across Europe. A €35 million fee has been suggested as the figure required to prise him from Roma, a reasonable price for a player entering his prime.

Whether he’s truly capable of becoming a top-tier Premier League goalkeeper remains to be seen. Svilar has pedigree, but few would rank him alongside the game’s elite just yet. Still, in a market low on affordable, reliable stoppers, he represents a gamble worth considering.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Manchester United fans, Svilar represents both promise and risk. There’s a strong sense that the club cannot afford another high-profile misfire in goal after the Andre Onana experiment. While Svilar may not be the kind of name that sets pulses racing, his age, potential and price tag make him a logical consideration. If United are aiming to build stability from the back, they could do worse than start with someone like Svilar.

Chelsea fans might be less convinced. With Kepa and Sanchez already on the books, and the focus reportedly on Mike Maignan, Svilar would feel more like a compromise than a priority. There’s little doubt that the Blues want a marquee keeper, and while Svilar has admirers, he might not fit the bill stylistically or reputationally.

For both clubs, the bigger question is strategic clarity. Do you invest in potential or proven excellence? Svilar sits somewhere in the middle. His name may not echo like De Gea or Čech, but in the chaos of modern football, he might just offer a calm solution.
