Manchester City midfielder Rodri has reflected on his first Champions League goal but urged his teammates to remain cautious following Tuesday’s remarkable 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s side took a major step towards a third straight UEFA Champions League semi-final after an incredible 3-0 quarter-final first-leg victory against Bayern Munich at the Etihad Stadium.
The Blues will take a three goal advantage to next Wednesday’s second-leg clash at the Allianz Arena, as newly appointed Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel endured a dismal return to England.
Rodri smashed City into the lead midway through the first half as his ambitious long-range effort cannoned into the far corner on the 27th minute.
City defended resolutely throughout and doubled their advantage through Bernardo Silva’s header in the 70th minute, punishing a defensive mistake from Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano.
A matter of minutes later Erling Haaland made it 3-0, scoring his 45th goal of the season after being teed up by John Stones.
The Blues’ opening goal was another sublime strike from midfielder Rodri, who’s emphatic effort was his first Champions League goal.
“It was very special for me to score my first goal in the Champions League,” said the Spaniard when reflecting on the game at full-time.
“At that moment we were struggling because they are a great, great team. Sometimes we understand we cannot have 80% possession. They play too.”
The 26 year-old was quick to point towards the importance of a clean sheet but also urged caution regarding the result ahead of the second-leg next Wednesday.
“It is a great result for us but also the way the team played. The key for me today was the defensive side, it was great, and we understood how to punish them.
“We scored three and could score four but it is a great result.
“We don’t think it is done. They are a good team and we are happy with the performance but we will have to try to win the game.”
City travel to Munich next Wednesday, with Chelsea or Real Madrid awaiting the winners of the tie in the semi-final.
Next weeks second-leg clash will be the Sky Blues’ third visit to Germany this season, with City having played fellow Bundesliga opponents Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig in the competition already this year.
