Manchester City’s defensive midfield star Rodrigo dropped a simple one-word response to a question about what separates himself and his teammates from Arsenal.

The Spanish midfielder completed an unbeaten season for Manchester City on a personal note, failing to end up on the losing side when being selected for action by manager Pep Guardiola across all competitions.

As part of that triumph, Rodri joined his Manchester City teammates in recording a history-defining campaign in the Premier League, claiming the English top-flight crown for a fourth successive season – the first time such a feat has ever been achieved.

That success did not come without an almighty challenge for Rodri and Pep Guardiola’s players, with the Spaniard holding off the threat of Arsenal for the duration of the campaign and beating the Gunners to the title by two points.

But what exactly was the difference between the two sides, given the fact that some will point towards the four points that Arsenal took from Manchester City in their two meetings at the Emirates Stadium and the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking to Manchester City’s in-house media team after their fourth consecutive Premier League title win on Sunday afternoon, Rodri issued a brutal one-word response to questions on what separates himself and the squad from their title challengers.

“Mentality,” the Spaniard responded. “We have the best players and one of the best generations I’ve seen in Europe but the only way to achieve this is every day. It’s the toughest thing in football to keep winning. We won at Tottenham away and we never won there.”

“Last nine games we must win because of Arsenal,” he continued. “We are so excited about what we have achieved but the repercussion of what we have done, the change of the history of the Club, we will realise in a few years.

“I am very proud of the way I grow in this league and this team from the first year to now. The way I build my winning mentality. I am very proud of myself, my family, my team-mates. We deserve it because of all the effort we put in right until the end.”

Manchester City could yet make it four trophies won this season, following on from their historic Treble last campaign, with an FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium looming.
