Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has claimed that many people within the football club did not believe Amad Diallo would make it in English football.
The Ivorian joined in 2021 but struggled massively for playing time.
In his first three seasons at the club, he only made nine appearances, being sent out on loan to Glasgow Rangers before an incredibly fruitful spell at Sunderland.
Injury in the pre-season tour of 2023 meant he only began to get chances in the first team in the last few months of last season, but he has come to life this season, playing in 23 games, scoring four goals and providing six assists.
He underlined his importance to the team with a stunning display at the weekend versus Manchester City.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand highlighted that his progress was hardly seen as inevitable by many at the club.
Commenting on initial impressions about the player, he said, “immediately it felt like, not for us, not good enough. People inside and outside the club were thinking, too small, too lightweight, not dynamic or powerful enough for this league.”
“They were thinking, I don’t know what he is; he’s a good footballer, but he’s not got it.”
Ferdinand then praised the player for turning the situation on its head and becoming one of the key members of Ruben Amorim’s side.
“My man has seen and heard that stuff and used it as fuel and gone to work, gone out on loan and look at him now.”
The United legend claimed his ability to turn the situation around is a “testament” to his character and that he is now arguably the first name on the team sheet.
Ferdinand also stated that the Ivorian had “the biggest heart” and that he was set on proving the doubters wrong with his immense work rate and skill.
“With and without the ball, he’s been brilliant. I think he’s a real footballer. I don’t think that was ever in doubt, everyone could see the talent. But they just didn’t see the other side of him when you look at him.”
