Richards lifts U.S. over Saudi Arabia, secures Quarterfinals berth

AUSTIN, Texas – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continued with the United States earning a 1-nil victory against Saudi Arabia in Group D on Thursday at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Abdulrahman Al Obud had an attempt inside the box in the 31’, and nearly put the tournament guests in the lead, but U.S. defender Chris Richards made a crucial block to negate the attempt.
Richards scored the lone goal of the encounter in the 63’, striking with his left foot in the box to connect with a free kick service from Sebastian Berhalter.
U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese recorded one save and earned his second consecutive clean sheet.
With the victory, the United States improved to six points to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
The U.S. will play its third match of the group stage against Haiti on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia will face Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
