A report in the Italian press reveals the reasons that prompted Inter Milan and AC Milan to avert the San Siro renovation plan.

Milano Mayor Giuseppe Sala has been pushing for this project, entrusting WeBuild with the planning.

The building company presented a detailed study for the two clubs back in June.

The suggested plan would have allowed the stadium to remain active during the renovation works, only closing some sections while the campaign is ongoing.

But in today’s meeting, Inter and Milan informed Sala of their rejection. Instead, they are now open to an old proposal dating back to 2019 which would see them build a new stadium together in the San Siro area next to the current Giuseppe Meazza ground.

Calciomercato explains the reasons behind the two clubs’ decision.

The Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri seemingly deemed the plan too expensive compared to its benefits.

For instance, the partial closure of some sections during reconstruction works would see them miss out on large figures in terms of matchday revenues. This would be the case for at least four seasons.

Inter Milan & AC Milan Reject San Siro Renovation Project Due To The High Costs

The two clubs have also been considering separate projects in the outskirts of Milano. Inter identified Rozzano as their potential new home, while Milan opted for San Donato.

However, both clubs have recently slammed the breaks on these projects, also due to the high costs.

Therefore, the two Serie A giants are willing to work together once more to build a new stadium in San Siro while sharing the cost of the operation.

As Sala revealed following today’s meeting, the two clubs have inquired about the cost of buying the land in San Siro, which would also include the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

The superintendency has recently placed a constraint on the land to prevent the demolition of the current stadium.

So it remains to be seen if buying the property would be a plausible scenario.
