Inter Milan are unlikely to sign Lille striker Jonathan David next summer due to the costs of a transfer and the fact that they wouldn’t be offering him a starting role.

This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews.

Over the last few weeks, Inter have been strongly linked with Canadian international striker David.

And on the face of it, the Nerazzurri’s interest in David makes perfect sense.

David will be available on a free transfer next summer. His contract with Lille runs out at the end of next June.

And Inter have been a club very active in pursuing free transfer opportunities in recent years.

That is how the Nerazzurri signed all of Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Andre Onana, Marcus Thuram, Mehdi Taremi, and Piotr Zielinski.

It is therefore unsurprising that Inter have been laying the groundwork for a potential deal for David.

And FCIN note that over the last few weeks, Inter have been fairly optimistic that a transfer could happen.

However, reports FCIN, at this stage, a move for the 24-year-old looks very unlikely.

There are a couple of reasons for this.

Firstly, there are the costs of the transfer.

Even though Inter wouldn’t have to spend a transfer fee on David, there would still be other high costs. The 24-year-old will demand significant wages, and the sign-on bonus and agent commissions will also likely be fairly high.

Then, David himself has cooled his interest in joining Inter.

One of the main priorities the Canadian has will be starting regularly next season.

David wants to join a club where he would be a first-choice starter in attack. And at the Nerazzurri, the presence of Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram would make that unlikely.
