Manchester City officials are aiming to secure four new signings across three positions during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a new report.
The plan from within the Etihad Stadium follows a significant haul of fresh impetus brought into Pep Guardiola’s playing squad at the midway stage of the ongoing season, when the club sanctioned a spend north of £170 million on four new players.
Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis were brought into the defensive ranks from RC Lens and Palmeiras respectively, while Nico Gonzalez arrived to bolster midfield from FC Porto, and Omar Marmoush adding much-needed firepower in attack from Eintracht Frankfurt.
However, given the age profile of several first-team stars and the need to cater for the future of the club, Manchester City’s recruitment drive has not been completed there, with a similar number of new names anticipated for the summer months.
Other additions are likely to hinge on possible outgoings, with the futures of a number of players remaining up in the air as the season reaches it’s conclusion, including the likes of Ederson, John Stones, Bernardo Silva, and Jack Grealish.
According to the information of The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Manchester City will target four major signings during the summer window, with incoming director of football Hugo Viana starting work on adding two midfielders, a left-back and a right-back to the squad.
The report reaffirms that AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders is wanted for one available midfield role, while there is also interest in Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, among other names in central positions.
However, it is stressed that the search for a new right-back as a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker is ‘less straightforward’, with PSG’s Achraf Hakimi considered ‘the best in class’ but also deemed ‘almost impossible’ to sign.
As such, City are said to have looked at Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso with admiration for Flamengo’s Wesley and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, while a left-back is viewed as a final summer priority and the club will be expected to be in the race for Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri.
In the search for a new creative midfielder, Manchester City are believed to have already withdrawn long-standing interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, having initially identified the German as the ideal successor to Kevin De Bruyne.
The word from within the Etihad Stadium is that there was an active concern over the rising overall cost over a prospective move for the 22-year-old – who is also wanted by Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Real Madrid – with a €300 million total package mentioned in quarters.
Aside from the likes of Reijnders and Gibbs-White, Manchester City have also been tentatively linked with an audacious move for Barcelona’s Dani Olmo as an alternative solution to Wirtz, although there has been little in the way of concrete developments concerning the Spaniard.
