Tottenham Hotspur are among several top-tier clubs eyeing a move for Shakhtar Donetsk’s standout midfielder, Giorgi Sudakov this summer. As reported by Ben Jacobs in CaughtOffside, Spurs’ interest in the young Ukrainian is intensifying, with his skill set drawing comparisons to Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
At just 21 years old, Sudakov has been instrumental in Shakhtar’s quest for a domestic double, contributing seven goals and three assists this season. His performances, particularly in the Ukrainian Cup, where he netted twice in the semi-finals, have not only showcased his potential but also mirrored the style of his idol, Phil Foden. “I really like the way he plays. He is an incredible footballer,” Sudakov remarked about Foden, indicating the level of aspiration and benchmark for his own career.

Sudakov’s prowess has not gone unnoticed, with interest from not just Spurs, but also Italian giants Inter Milan and Juventus. However, financial constraints may limit the Serie A clubs’ pursuit, leaving Tottenham in a favourable position. Spurs are on the lookout to bolster their midfield this summer, and scouting reports suggest that Sudakov could seamlessly fit into Ange Postecoglou’s system at North London.
Despite his young age, Sudakov has a substantial release clause set at €150 million, reflecting Shakhtar’s valuation of their prized asset. A previous €40 million bid from Napoli was turned down in January, with Sudakov stating, “They made a good offer, but the club rejected it. I focused all my attention on Shakhtar.” It is understood that a fee in the region of €70 million might be required to commence negotiations, a figure that falls short of the €100 million Shakhtar received for Mykhailo Mudryk last year.

Beyond the pitch, Sudakov is a figure of resilience and ambition. He has represented Ukraine during a tumultuous period, marked by the ongoing conflict in his homeland. His performances in the Euro 2024 playoffs not only helped secure Ukraine’s spot in the tournament but also provided a beacon of hope for his nation. “Qualifying for Euro 2024 is an incredible achievement for the entire national team, and for our country. And of course, with a war ongoing, we hope to be an inspiration at the tournament,” Sudakov reflected on the broader impact of his sporting endeavours.

Despite the swirling transfer rumours, Sudakov remains committed to his current club and focused on his development. His roots are deeply tied to Ukrainian soil, and his ultimate dream extends beyond just playing at top European clubs. Sudakov yearns for a return to Shakhtar’s home stadium in Donetsk, displaced since the onset of the War in Donbas in 2014. The young midfielder’s maturity and perspective are evident as he navigates his career amidst challenging circumstances. “It is very difficult to constantly represent your club playing away [from Donbas], but all of us in the team have a common goal,” he stated, emphasizing the collective spirit and resilience of his team.
In conclusion, Giorgi Sudakov is not just a footballer with immense potential but also a symbol of hope and resilience. As Spurs and other European giants line up for his signature, the young Ukrainian’s summer appears set for a potentially life-changing move, one that could catapult him onto a bigger stage and further into the footballing spotlight.
