Liverpool’s midfield prodigy Stefan Bajcetic looks set for a loan spell in Spain, with reports from LiverpoolWorld suggesting Real Betis are in advanced talks to secure the youngster’s services for the second half of the season. Bajcetic, who impressed during his initial breakthrough at Anfield, has seen his development hindered by injuries. Now, Liverpool are keen to ensure he gains consistent playing time to rediscover his form.
After a promising 2022-23 campaign, Bajcetic endured a difficult spell marred by injuries, making just three appearances across all competitions last term. This season, Liverpool decided to send him on loan to Red Bull Salzburg, where a reunion with former Reds assistant Pep Lijnders was expected to aid his progress. However, Salzburg’s season has been tumultuous. Lijnders, alongside ex-Reds coach Vitor Matos, was sacked before Christmas as the Austrian side struggled domestically.

Despite the challenges, Bajcetic made 18 appearances for Salzburg, including five outings in the Champions League. Yet, with Salzburg’s instability and limited opportunities, the prospect of a move to Real Betis appears more appealing. According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Betis, currently ninth in La Liga under former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, are eager to bring the Spaniard back to his homeland.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has been vocal about Bajcetic’s potential and the need for regular game time to harness his talent. Before the midfielder’s switch to Salzburg, Slot stated:
“I hope it will be a big year for him because he’s a very talented player and I think he could become a very important player for us, but only if he gets playing time now.”
Slot’s comments underline Liverpool’s long-term view on Bajcetic’s development. The Reds’ midfield boasts a wealth of talent, with players like Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Curtis Jones vying for spots. This depth limits Bajcetic’s immediate chances, prompting the club to seek a temporary solution.
Slot further elaborated on Liverpool’s strategy:
“If you are that young and you’ve been out for so long, the only thing you need is playing time. He could have playing time over here, but we’ve got six or seven very good midfielders, so his playing time here will always be more limited than we expect him to play at Salzburg.”
The manager’s pragmatic approach reflects Liverpool’s intent to prioritise Bajcetic’s development rather than keeping him on the fringes of the first team.
A move to Real Betis presents a unique opportunity for Bajcetic to establish himself in a competitive league. Under the guidance of Pellegrini, Betis have consistently punched above their weight in La Liga, and the club’s focus on developing young talent aligns with Bajcetic’s needs.
Furthermore, returning to Spain could help Bajcetic reconnect with his roots, having originally signed for Liverpool from Celta Vigo in December 2020. His technical skills and composure on the ball suit the Spanish style of play, and regular minutes in La Liga could accelerate his growth.

Slot emphasised the long-term benefits of such a move:
“So for him, and us, we think it’s best for him to play at the moment, instead of maybe playing a few times and then being on the bench for a long time again. It’s very difficult to keep a player fit who’s been out for 15 months when you only play him once in a while.”
Slot added:
“So this is for the long term. Again, this club has been smart, in my opinion, in the past for not only looking for the short term, but also the long term. It’s a smart decision, at least in our opinion, to let him go somewhere, where he will hopefully play a lot of games. Then for next season, we’ll have a player. If he fulfils his potential, [he] could definitely, definitely play for us in the future.”
Liverpool fans are likely to have mixed feelings about this report. On one hand, there’s excitement about Bajcetic’s potential to become a crucial part of the club’s future. His performances in the 2022-23 season showcased his maturity beyond his years, and his ability to control midfield battles was a beacon of hope during a challenging campaign for the Reds.
However, there’s also concern about whether sending him out on another loan could hinder his integration into the first team. With Arne Slot now at the helm, Liverpool’s tactical approach has shifted, and there’s a growing fear that Bajcetic might struggle to adapt if he spends too much time away.
The Betis link is promising, though. Under Pellegrini, Betis play a style of football that could benefit Bajcetic. His defensive awareness, combined with his ability to progress the ball, makes him a suitable fit for La Liga. If he thrives in Spain, Liverpool could welcome back a more polished and confident midfielder next season.
Still, fans will want assurances that Bajcetic’s long-term future remains at Anfield. His talent is undeniable, and Liverpool must ensure that his development is managed carefully to avoid losing one of the most promising youngsters in their ranks.
