Liverpool began the new Premier League season with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, a result that secured three points but raised questions about defensive stability. The attacking unit demonstrated fluency and unpredictability, yet the back line appeared far from secure.
It is in this context that recruitment discussions have centred on strengthening central defence. Anfield’s leadership, working alongside head coach Arne Slot, are keen to identify a reliable long-term partner at the heart of the back four. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has emerged as their preferred option.
While Liverpool’s pursuit has been well-documented, Guehi’s performances have also attracted interest beyond England. Inter Milan are monitoring developments closely, with senior figures Giuseppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio viewing the Palace defender as a strategic target for the coming years.
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that Inter would consider moving for Guehi in 2026 should he see out his current contract at Selhurst Park. In that case, the Italian club would be well placed to present a lucrative free-agent package. For now, their involvement remains more observational than active, but the prospect of continental competition underscores the level of Guehi’s reputation.
Liverpool’s efforts to bring Guehi to Anfield have reached an impasse over transfer valuation. Palace are understood to be holding firm at £45–50 million, a figure that Anfield officials deem excessive given the player’s contract position. With just one year left on his deal, Liverpool are reluctant to exceed £35–40 million.
That stand-off leaves Palace with a decision: negotiate now or risk losing their captain for nothing further down the line. For Liverpool, it means a wait-and-see approach, though the need for defensive reinforcement remains pressing.
If no resolution is found this summer, Guehi could remain with Palace for another season before considering his options as a free agent. Such a scenario would open the door for Inter Milan to move decisively, offering a long-term agreement without the burden of a transfer fee.
For Liverpool, the possibility of missing out on Guehi would necessitate exploring alternatives. Among those mentioned is Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, who has also been linked with a potential switch to Anfield.
The coming weeks will determine whether Liverpool can find common ground with Palace, or if Inter Milan’s patient strategy eventually brings rewards. Either way, Guehi’s future promises to be one of the more significant defensive narratives of the transfer window.
