Simone Inzaghi’s coy remarks regarding his future and Al-Hilal annoyed Inter Milan in the buildup to the Champions League final.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri were angry as they saw the coach’s comments as disrupting preparations for the match.

Inter Milan lost 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final last weekend.

And while it was a highly impressive performance from PSG, there was also a sense of “What happened?” when it came to Inter’s performance.

The Nerazzurri seemed to be out of sorts on a physical level. Athletic preparations and fatigue had been worry throughout the last few months of the campaign.

However, at the same time, there was also a sense that Inter were struggling just as much on a physical level.

Watching Inter’s performance, it wouldn’t be ridiculous to read a sort of distraction in many of the players.

It is worth noting, therefore, that rumours regarding Simone Inzaghi and Al-Hilal were in the background in the entire buildup to the Champions League final.

The reports had started to emerge in the weeks before the final.

And in fact, a representative of the Saudi club had been in Milan even the day before Inter’s semifinal second leg win over Barcelona.

Therefore, it was perhaps inevitable that the doubts would creep in. The squad were well aware of the turbulence behind the scenes.

And this perhaps contributed to the sense that the Champions League final was the “end of a cycle.”

And the Inter hierarchy feel that Inzaghi himself contributed to this. Particularly with his remarks before the match.

Inzaghi stated that it would be “crazy” to think about Al-Hilal links so close to the Champions League final. And that transfer rumours “don’t exist” in the face of such a big match.

The former Lazio coach confirmed that he intended to discuss his future with Inter after the final.

And Inzaghi suggested that he would stay at the club – if “the conditions were right.”

Therefore, Inzaghi was leaving the door wide open for a move. And he even made clear that he’d received offers “from Italy and abroad.”

Therefore, the Gazzetta report, Inter feel that these coy, wishy-washy answers only fuelled the speculation and uncertainty.

Just days before such an historic match for the club, this was not acceptable.
