Piotr Zielinski has leapfrogged Kristjan Asllani in the pecking order and will start tomorrow’s game between Sparta Prague and Inter Milan.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the Pole will replace the injured Hakan Calhanoglu at the expense of the Albanian.
Despite regularly deputizing for the Turkish superstar during his absence, Asllani has failed to live up to the billing.
His showings against Bologna and Empoli didn’t convince Simone Inzaghi.
Therefore, Zielinski is in the driver’s seat to take the playmaker’s role in Wednesday’s must-win Champions League clash in Prague.
Zielinski is steadily regaining consistency after an injury-hit start to life at Giuseppe Meazza.
Indeed, the 30-year-old has started the last three matches in Serie A – more than in the first 21 rounds combined.
Now, he’s the front-runner to take Calhanoglu’s place as Inter’s deep-lying playmaker.
Zielinski’s positional change means Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Nicolo Barella will retain their spots in the engine room.
However, Davide Frattesi will likely remain on the bench despite returning to full fitness.
Inter will be out to fortify their pursuit of automatic knockout qualification after winning four of their first six league-phase outings.
