Earlier this week, Marcel Daum, assistant coach at Bayer Leverkusen and son of former Bundesliga coach Christoph Daum, posted a photo of a slightly smaller Bundesliga trophy on a pedestal in an Instagram story with the text "Thanks, boss!".
According to Bild, Daum - along with every member of Leverkusen's coaching staff - received the trophy from head coach Xabi Alonso ahead of Saturday's 2-0 win over Augsburg as a thank you for the work they put in last season to help the club win the German double.
The report goes on to say that Alonso spent a lot of money on the gesture. He apparently paid around €6,000 to have each trophy made by Bremen silversmiths Koch und Bergfeld, who hold the licence to make the replicas. In all, he had 11 replicas made, for a total cost of between €60,000 and €70,000.
"I have a copy of all the trophies I have won at home. Now I have one of this championship trophy. This success is a nice memory for everyone. That's why I did it," Xabi Alonso told Bild of his gesture, which he had informed Leverkusen's managing director for sport, Simon Rolfes, of in advance.
“It's a great gesture from Xabi and nice proof that the coaches are a very good team,” Rolfes is quoted as saying.
