Real Oviedo host Real Madrid in La Liga on Sunday. The home side have returned to La Liga after 24 years, marking their 100th season with a new-look squad.
Real Oviedo return to La Liga this season after a lengthy absence, marking their first top-flight campaign since 2000/01. However, they started life back in Spain’s elite with a tough 2-0 defeat to Villarreal.
The newly-promoted side will be eager to build on their performances at home in front of their passionate supporters at Estadio Carlos Tartiere. Defender Álvaro Lemos remains sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury expected to keep him out until mid-October. Meanwhile, David Costas is unavailable due to a red card suspension.
Oviedo’s squad depth and fitness will be tested against the formidable Real Madrid side, but they possess a fighting spirit to aim for a positive result.
Real Madrid are aiming for successive wins following a narrow 1-0 victory over Osasuna, courtesy of Kylian Mbappé’s decisive penalty.
The team is adjusting well under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who took charge this season following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure. The squad will be boosted by the return of Antonio Rüdiger, strengthening their defensive options.
However, significant injuries persist, with Ferland Mendy still out with a thigh injury. Jude Bellingham is sidelined until at least October following shoulder surgery, and both Eduardo Camavinga and Endrick listed as major doubts due to ankle and hamstring issues respectively. Madrid’s unbeaten start has shown encouraging signs, but Alonso will seek to maintain squad fitness to stay competitive across all fronts.
The newly-promoted side lost at Villarreal 2-0 but will be eager to show a strong performance in their first home fixture against Real Madrid.
Real Madrid won their season opener at the Santiago Bernabeu against Osasuna last week and will look forward to continue their winning streak against Real Oviedo.
