Jude Bellingham recently became the most expensive English player ever when he joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth a reported £115m.

But the new Galáctico has not forgotten where it all began for him.

Bellingham came through the ranks at Birmingham City and when he left for Germany at the age of 17, his boyhood club retired his number 22 shirt.

This week the England midfielder returned to his hometown to surprise fans who had turned up at a pop-up adidas shop called ‘Store Twenty-Two’ hoping to get their hands on a Bellingham Real Madrid shirt.

But what they didn’t expect was a surprise appearance from the man himself, who manned the checkout to sign autographs and hand out free gifts.

“I may now play for Real Madrid, but Birmingham will forever be my home,” Bellingham said, via adidas.

“I am forever thankful to my family and friends for their support throughout my journey so far, as well as to the people of Birmingham.

“Ever since I made my debut here, their support has pushed me on, and helped me to believe that anything is possible.

“Today I wanted to come back and show them what that means to me, and to make sure they can be a part of the exciting next chapter of my career.”
