Ending the season with none of the major trophies, Real Madrid’s campaign has been sub-par at best. The team has been lacklustre across the field all season but the lack of depth in defence seriously cost them throughout.

Los Blancos are now on the verge of signing Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth in what would be a massive signing for their long-term plans. The youngster is, after all, one of the world’s highest-rated defensive prospects.

Yet, the administration does not deem it sufficient to bridge the gap in defence as relayed by Fabrizio Romano.

Eyeing more depth

Huijsen may be the only centre-back signing for Los Blancos this summer, but the Italian journalist relays that Real Madrid see the need for at least one more world-class centre-back in the next 1-2 years.

They admire Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and see him as a great fit for their style and plans. He also forms a great target given that talks over a contract extension between him and Liverpool have been stagnant from October and November after a few hurdles popped up.

The 25-year-old defender’s current deal runs out in June 2026, making him a favourable target for next summer should a renewal not work out. His age, moreover, makes him a good option for the long term.

Real Madrid likely see the need for another centre-back since Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are both on the wrong side of 30 and not long-term options.

Huijsen and Eder Militao are worthy starters for the long haul, but the latter’s devastating injury record leaves serious doubts over his fitness and ability to reach the same pre-injury levels.

Konate, needless to say, would serve as a great candidate in the department both as a starter and a backup.

Real Madrid also have their eye on William Saliba of Arsenal as a target for the future as well. So, it will be interesting to see who they go after.
