Kylian Mbappé is no longer a Paris Saint-Germain player after his contract with the capital club expired on June 30. Nonetheless, stories from this past 2023-24 season are beginning to surface.

This past campaign, the Frenchman was the focal point of the Parisian team following the departure of Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. last summer.

Even though Mbappé was the team’s star player last season, he wasn’t the captain, as that duty belonged to Marquinhos, although the 25-year-old did wear the armband when the Brazilian wasn’t in the starting lineup.

L’ÉQUIPE Explore reported that someone close to the players explained why the group chose Marquinhos over the now-Real Madrid star.

“There was a feeling of humiliation, but all the players still voted for Marquinhos to remain captain,” the source told the outlet. “Between them, they say that this was the only political battle Kylian didn’t win at PSG.”

Mbappé left as a free agent to sign with Real Madrid and begin a new chapter of his career. Meanwhile, PSG will turn the page on the superstar era and focus on young players looking to make a name for themselves.
