Real Madrid reject chance to sign 54-goal striker | OneFootball

La Liga giants Real Madrid recently turned down the opportunity to bring in one of Europe’s most prolific attackers.

That’s according to Blancos insider Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, who points towards Viktor Gyökeres.

Frontman Gyökeres, for his part, is fresh off nothing short of a spectacular campaign in 2024/25.

On the books of Portuguese heavyweights Sporting CP, the Swede racked up a head-turning 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.

Such figures have given rise to links with a whole host of leading clubs from across the continent, chief among them Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

As alluded to above, though, not interested in Gyökeres’ addition at present are those behind the scenes at Real Madrid.

As confirmed by the aforementioned Mario Cortegana, amid an ongoing search for reinforcements at centre-forward, the 27-year-old was recently offered to the board at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid, however, rebuffed the approach, keen on a different profile of player:

‘The club likes him but ruled him out because of the potential cost and because they see him as a starting striker.’
