If Real Madrid’s defence was not exposed enough already this season, Eder Militao’s ACL injury has left the club battling for survival in the department.

David Alaba is yet to return from the injury he suffered a year ago, while Jesus Vallejo is not trusted by Carlo Ancelotti. Antonio Rudiger, thus, is the only available first-team centre-back at the manager’s disposal.

During the emergency that unfolded when Militao went down injured against Osasuna, the management laid their trust in the young academy starlet Raul Asencio who not only dished out a mature performance but also recorded an assist on debut.

Now, the Real Madrid management is looking to hand him a promotion and Matteo Moretto brings to light the latest update on the young sensation.

Contract renewal on the cards

As relayed by the journalist, Asencio will stay exclusively with the first team after the international break with Carlo Ancelotti now beginning to trust the player.

The 21-year-old is even ahead of Vallejo on the coach’s pecking order and will thus become part of the team’s first-choice defensive pairing as things stand.

Further, Real Madrid identifies that with his rise comes the obvious spotlight and interest from clubs across Europe and Los Blancos are thus already negotiating a renewal with the player.

There have already been several conversations between the club and the defender’s entourage and his new deal is reported to be on improved terms and wages. His current deal runs out in 2026 so there is a sense of urgency.

The 21-year-old is expected to start against Leganes after the break and will be a serious option even against Liverpool and Getafe.

The onus to step up and claim a regular place is on him, however, as Alaba is increasingly close to a return from his injury.
