Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Benfica to sign promising Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras in a deal worth €50 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Madrid and Benfica had been in contact since the end of the European season, but the Portuguese outfit were keen to take Carreras to the Club World Cup.
Personal terms have already been agreed between Carreras and Real Madrid for some time now, meaning that a formal announcement is imminent.
The Spaniard is expected to sign a five-year contract and will become Madrid’s third signing of the summer after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen.
Carreras began his football journey in Real Madrid’s youth academy, joining at the age of 14.
After progressing through the ranks, he moved to Manchester United in 2020, seeking first-team opportunities.
However, he did not make a senior appearance for United and saw his career was revitalised at Benfica, where he initially joined on loan before making the move permanent.
At Benfica, Carreras quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young left-backs. During the 2024/25 season, he made 52 appearances across all competitions and recorded four goals and as many assists, showcasing his quality at both ends of the pitch.
Real Madrid’s left-back position has been a point of concern, with Ferland Mendy struggling with recurring injuries and Fran Garcia yet to consistently deliver at the highest level.
Carreras offers a versatile solution, capable of playing as a traditional left-back or as a wing-back in a three-at-the-back system, providing tactical flexibility for Xabi Alonso.
