The upcoming summer transfer window is largely expected to be a quiet one at Real Madrid with Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold the only major target.
Any more recruitments will be decided based on how the team finishes the season and if there are any big-name departures in the summer.
Despite the injury issues plaguing the centre-back department, Real Madrid have opted not to reinforce the position this summer, especially following the emergence of Raul Asencio this season, along with other younger talents like Jacobo Ramon and Joan Martinez.
While signing a centre-back is not a priority for Real Madrid this year, the Merengues are well aware that by 2026 or 2027, they will need to strengthen its defensive line.
To that end, journalist Jorge C Picon reports that Real Madrid’s scouting department is tracking several defensive targets and one name that stands out above the rest is Arsenal mainstay William Saliba.
Real Madrid maintain a clear strategy when it comes to new signings – identifying players in favourable contractual situations who would not require exorbitant transfer fees.
The 23-year-old Frenchman, known for his incredible physical attributes, is under contract with Arsenal until 2027.
This timeline presents an opportunity as, in 2026, Real Madrid could attempt to negotiate a reduced transfer fee or try to ensure he does not renew his contract with the Gunners, before potentially signing him on a free transfer once his deal expires.

It might seem ambitious, but the Spanish capital giants have successfully executed similar moves before – signing David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, and potentially, Alexander-Arnold soon, without paying transfer fees.
The emergence of Asencio has provided a short-term solution. Alongside him, other promising talents such as Ramn and Martinez offer added defensive depth, temporarily easing concerns.
However, Real Madrid understand that, sooner or later, reinforcing the heart of the defence will become essential.
Two of the club’s main centre-backs, Rudiger and Alaba, are in their thirties and have struggled with physical issues. The club believes these problems could affect their performance in the near future.
Additionally, both players’ contracts expire in 2026, meaning the club’s top executives will soon need to decide whether to offer them renewals.
Another major question mark surrounds Eder Militao. While his recovery is progressing well, the club remain cautious after he suffered two serious ACL injuries in quick succession.
As such, Saliba is seen as a player who could secure the club’s defensive stability for years to come. However, prising him away from Arsenal will be no easy task.
