Real Madrid have been offered the chance to sign one of Manchester City’s central defenders in the summer transfer window, as per a report from Spain.

City’s struggles this season has stemmed largely from key absences in midfield and defence, having witnessed each of Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, John Stones and Nathan Ake spend time on the treatment table since August.

Pep Guardiola’s side have nine Premier League games left in their bid to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, currently sitting in fifth place in the table.

The January arrivals of centre-half pair Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis from RC Lens and Palmeiras respectively have alleviated City’s defensive troubles, with the former already one of the first names on Guardiola’s teamsheet.

The impending arrival of City’s to-be sporting director Hugo Viana is expected to see major upheaval in the first-team squad come the end of the season.

Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Ederson and Bernardo Silva could all leave in the summer and City will cash in on the major sales they’ve made in the last 24 months to reinvest accordingly.

There is uncertainty surrounding the respective future(s) of many of City’s current centre backs, with the harsh trust being the trio of Ake, Stones and Akanji have been unreliable in terms of form and fitness in the last 18 months.

Dias in 28 in May, still has his best years ahead of him and is likely to be an integral member of Guardiola’s newlook Manchester City side for the seasons to come.

However, Akanji has been offered to Real Madrid in their bid to add to their backline as the 30-year-old’s Manchester City future hangs in the balance, according to MARCA, who state that a transfer is unlikely to materialise given the defender will soon hit a depreciating curve as he steps into the twilight of his career.

If Akanji is given an indication that he is surplus to requirements, City will look to sell him this summer to get a market value fee for the Swiss international, who has over two years remaining on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium.
