After enduring an injury-riddled season, Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is once again in the spotlight for unwanted reasons.

The Frenchman finds himself back on the sidelines, watching from the stands as a season that promised to be crucial for his Real Madrid career gets underway.

Out for longer than expected

As reported by MARCA, the ankle sprain Camavinga suffered on 10 August has caused greater concern than initially thought.

The 22-year-old midfielder managed only a handful of training sessions under new manager Xabi Alonso after recovering from a previous fitness problem, but then suffered another setback in pre-season, just before the friendly against Tirol.

Predictions suggested the midfielder would be ready for the second matchday against Real Oviedo, but his recovery has stretched well beyond the 10 days that were first estimated.

The Frenchman has been working on the pitches at Valdebebas in recent training sessions. He has not yet joined the group, ruling him out for the league match against Mallorca.

Camavinga is counting down the days on the calendar, knowing that his return will not come until after the September international break.

One year, five injuries

The midfield department is densely populated at Real Madrid this season, with six first-team players – seven if David Alaba is counted – competing for three positions.

As such, September looms as a key month for Camavinga. After suffering five injuries only in the last year, he will look to bounce back and contribute in order to stop teetering on the edge.

Last season he missed 29 of Real Madrid’s 68 matches through injury, which meant a 57% availability rate.

Now, in his fifth season as a Real Madrid player, Camavinga must leave the problems behind and live up to the immense potential he possesses.
