As Real Madrid continue to maintain uncertainty on the future of Carlo Ancelotti, rumours have intensified over Xabi Alonso potentially joining the club as head coach next season.

The Spaniard is currently one of the hottest candidates to replace Ancelotti, especially following his plaudits at Bayer Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso, though, has no immediate desire to return to the Santiago Bernabeu as the head coach. The Spaniard himself addressed these rumours in a recent interview with Movistar.

When asked about the release clause of his Bayer Leverkusen contract, Alonso said (h/t SPORT), “These are contract issues. I am very connected and very comfortable here.”

Xabi Alonso joined Leverkusen in October last year, on the back of success coaching the Real Sociedad reserve team. In over a year, Leverkusen have enjoyed immense success under the Spaniard.

Die Werkself are leading the Bundesliga table, ahead of giants Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

Earlier reports have pointed out that Xabi Alonso does have a special clause in his contract that would allow him to join Real Madrid on a cut-price deal. But it appears the coach is not comfortable talking about it right now.

What does the future hold for Ancelotti?

As things stand, Ancelotti still remains in contention to prolong his stay at the Bernabeu beyond 2024, despite interest from the Brazilian national team.

The Italian mastermind, in fact, might still be the favourite to occupy the hot seat at Real Madrid next season.

In fact, recent reports suggest that Real Madrid intend to tie down Ancelotti’s renewal before Christmas with Brazil knocking on his doors.
