Marcelo has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.
The left-back has called time on an illustrious career that saw the Brazilian regarded as one of the finest full-backs of his generation. After an initial emergence at Fluminense, Marcelo spent the bulk of his career at Real Madrid after signing for the Spanish side as a teenager.
He made 546 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 38 goals, and winning 35 trophies. Among his honours included six La Liga titles and five Champions League trophies with the defender scoring in the 2014 Champions League final win over Atletico Madrid in Lisbon. He became the first non-Spaniard to captain the club since 1904.
After leaving Real Madrid in 2022, he had short spells with Olympiacos and former club Fluminense, where he won the Copa Libertadores before deciding to hang up his boots.
He has announced his decision to retire with a ‘forever grateful’ post on social media.
