One of Real Madrid’s biggest transfer targets who did not materialise before the FIFA Club World Cup was Alvaro Carreras, the Benfica left-back who is seen as the missing piece in Xabi Alonso’s dynamics.

The Portuguese side intentionally slowed down negotiations and stalled the player’s move to Madrid, thus forcing him to stay and play for them this month.

Once the tournament ends, however, negotiations are expected to fast-track and the player will likely make the switch to Spain. Until then, it has been Fran Garcia who has covered in the department, with Ferland Mendy injured.

Needless to say, however, Garcia’s future is also under a cloud of doubt given the competition once Carreras arrives.

Garcia speaks

Speaking to the media after Real Madrid’s win over Pachuca, the left-back was asked about the club’s interest in Carreras and how he felt about the arrival of a new competitor.

“I live it quite calmly,” he began.

“The world of football talks a lot, I don’t know if an operation will be performed or not. I try to do my thing, give my best with this shirt and hopefully I can do it for much longer because I feel comfortable and I want to help as much as possible,” he added.

Speaking on the game against Pachuca and how Los Blancos were forced to dig deep after Raul Asencio’s red card, Garcia said:

“It’s a hard blow at the beginning of the game, you don’t expect that play to end in a red but the team has recovered well, has been able to show its face and has worked a lot with one less.”

“It can be seen in the result that we have achieved at the end,” he added.

He then extended his support to Asencio who has endured a torrid tournament so far, especially after his sending-off last night.

“It’s an unfortunate play because of how it’s given. I don’t know if it’s for red but it doesn’t take away merit from the type of player that is Raúl and what he has shown.”

“Everyone has a luck factor and he was unlucky. It doesn’t take away at all the incredible player he is,” he added.

Finally, the left-back was asked about rising star Gonzalo Garcia and how the forward was at the youth level.

“As it was Rail Asencio’s turn this season, now it’s Gonzalo’s turn in Mbappe’s absence. You can see that the people in the academy are prepared.”

“Carvajal and Lucas had the opportunity, I come from there and it can be seen now that they are working very well in the quarry. They are very well prepared,” he added on La Fabrica.
