The future of Jonathan Tah has been a hot topic in the transfer market, as the defender spends his final few months at Bayer Leverkusen.
The defender’s contract at Leverkusen expires at the end of the season and therefore, he will become available as a free agent in the summer.
Tah’s situation has put a number of top clubs across Europe on red alert, with Barcelona and Real Madrid among the clubs linked with a move for the defender.
For the longest time, Barcelona were labelled as the favourites to sign Tah. The club even have a verbal agreement with the player. who wants to move to Catalonia.
However, a recent report from Florian Plettenberg suggests Barcelona’s move to sign Tah has been halted, perhaps due to the club’s economic situation.
This could pave the way for Real Madrid to sneak in and secure the services of the German international.

Plettenberg adds that Real Madrid’s chances of signing Tah could dramatically increase especially if the club manage to bring in Xabi Alonso in the summer.
Alonso, the top candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid in the summer, has played a critical role in Tah’s journey so far and is well aware of the defender’s abilities.
As such, the German international might be open to the idea of reuniting with Alonso at the Santiago Bernabeu. The update from Plettenberg even adds that Tah as a strong relationship with Alonso.
That said, the Spanish giants could face stiff competition from Bayern Munich as well, who have also established themselves as a potential suitor for the German.
Bayern appear to have already internally reviewed the Tah situation in recent days. But with Real Madrid also keen, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Bayer Leverkusen defender this summer.
