Stopper Mendy, for his part, is of course fresh off a stellar individual campaign in Spain’s capital.

Playing an absolutely pivotal role in Real Madrid’s eventual domestic and European double, the 29-year-old established himself as a mainstay on the left of boss Carlo Ancelotti’s backline.

And yet, ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window, speculation nevertheless continued to run rampant surrounding Mendy’s future.

The former Lyon standout’s current terms at the Santiago Bernabéu are due to come to a close in just 12 months’ time.

Not only that, but it has long been common knowledge across the continent that the Real brass are keen on the services of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

If the latest word stemming from the media on Thursday is anything to go by, however, then those of a Blancos persuasion desperate to see Mendy stay put need not fret.

This comes amid confirmation on the part of the aforementioned Marca that:

‘The absolute priority of the Madrid directors at the moment is to close the renewal of the French full-back. They already have a proposal on the table.’

Though Real’s interest in Alphonso Davies remains very much alive, Carlo Ancelotti is adamant that he wants Mendy to continue with the club for the seasons to come, considering him the very best in world football in his role.

Contract negotiations, in turn, are firmly underway, amid confidence on the part of all parties that an agreement will soon be struck.
