The closure of Kylian Mbappe’s arrival has helped the Real Madrid offices shift their priority to other positions of interest. The centre-back department, on that front, appears to be in serious focus.

Nacho Fernandez’s departure has added steam to Real Madrid’s pursuit of a new signing, with Leny Yoro tipped as the prime target.

Mundo Deportivo, however, reveal the name of a rather surprising candidate on the list.

A target in London

As revealed by the Spanish outlet, Arsenal’s William Saliba is one of the names Los Blancos are monitoring as a potential target.

The 23-year-old has stood out for Mikel Arteta’s side in recent years and is widely considered one of the best players of the next generation.

Los Blancos have had their eye on the youngster for a while now, but are not alone as PSG are also said to have registered interest.

Saliba is currently on duty with the French National Team at the Euros and has started all four games for his team, overseeing three clean sheets in the process. Last season, he notably started all 38 Premier League games for Arsenal.

A far-fetched option

While interest from Real Madrid is sufficient to lure away most players of the game, Saliba’s move to the Spanish capital appears complicated for financial reasons.

Los Blancos have blatantly refused to meet Lille’s €60 million valuation of Leny Yoro and stay firm on their offer of €40 million. If that is indeed their budget for a new centre-back, it is safe to say that Saliba would be an unrealistic target.

The 23-year-old, after all, is under contract with Arsenal until 2027 and has a market value of close to €90 million. His signing, thus, will not come cheap.
