Rasmus Hojlund seems to be hitting form for Manchester United at the right time, with the club currently trying to recruit another striker.

Last season, the Dane looked lost up top, and managed a meagre four Premier League goals all campaign. And with the lack of options at hand, Ruben Amorim was forced to keep playing him.

Apart from his struggles in front of goal, the 22-year-old failed to impress with his back-to-goal play and all signs pointed towards a summer exit.

But he started strongly against West Ham in pre-season, before finding the back of the net against Bournemouth on Thursday. As a result, INEOS have not yet asked him to leave, with the Denmark international keen to fight for his place.

Sesko incoming

After missing out on several targets, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has been identified as the go-to option in the market thanks to Christopher Vivell’s insistence, even though the head coach would have liked Ollie Watkins.

Should the Slovenian arrive, in all likelihood the ex-Atalanta ace was expected to depart with reports of a swap deal gaining traction.

But The Sun have a different tale to tell. They have claimed that Amorim wants the United No.9 to stay and feels Sesko’s arrival will only aid him to improve.

“But Amorim also believes that the presence of Sesko will prove the spur Rasmus Hojlund requires to overcome his doubts and mature into a top class alternative.

“Amorim is understood to feel the lack of competition up front that Hojlund faced contributed to what the Dane admits was a “tough” season.

Amorim feels Rasmus Hojlund will benefit as a result

“Knowing he has to fight for game time against Sesko will force Hojlund out of his comfort zone and benefit both the former Atalanta striker and United.

“It is why the manager would prefer Hojlund to stay at the club, rather than leaving – although the Dane will be given the right to make his own decisions on his future.”

The added competition will spur him on to greater heights is the head coach’s thinking. Whether that will prove to be the case only time will tell.

A lot will depend on Leipzig’s final asking price and whether United can afford Sesko without resorting to selling the Danish ace.
