Goalkeeper Yann Sommer was the best performer and a rare bright spot for Inter Milan in their slumping Serie A loss to AC Milan.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Generally, a goalkeeper is not among a team’s outstanding performers in a match lost by two or more goals.

But Inter keeper Sommer cannot face too much criticism for his display against Milan yesterday evening.

The Swiss international gave a display of why he remains the starting keeper for the Nerazzurri despite the arrival of Josep Martinez as his long-term heir in the summer.

Sommer had a few shaky moments in possession in the derby clash.

But in terms of his shotstopping, the Inter keeper could not have done much better.

On both of Milan’s goals, there is little that Sommer could have done.

Rather, it was the Swiss international’s teammates who allowed Milan to get the chances from which they found the back of the net.

First, Christian Pulisic was able to waltz through the Inter midfield. The former Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund winger slotted his effort past the reach of Sommer for Milan’s early opener.

Then, defender Matteo Gabbia got his head to a set piece delivery ahead of any Inter player.

The Milan defender placed his effort where no keeper would have realistically had a chance.

On the other hand, Milan peppered Inter’s goal with shots. Particularly in the second half.

Sommer produced some outstanding saves on the likes of Tijani Reijnders and Rafael Leao to keep Inter in the match.

The 35-year-old could well have given his teammates the platform to at least get a point.

But Inter were unable to hold on in the end.

That was no fault of Sommer, however. The veteran keeper did at least keep the scoreline relatively respectable, even if in the end his fine work counted for little in terms of a result.
