Claudio Ranieri admitted in his post-match interview with Sky Sport that Mats Hummels’ foul was worthy of a red card in the first half of Roma’s loss to Athletic Bilbao.

“It was a clear red. I think he deserved it,” he said. “He should have kicked the ball to the left, it can happen. Hummels is a great champion, but the team came together in difficult moments.”

“Things came together and we held out for the whole first half; it’s a shame because we were doing well and we were convinced we would do well. The incidents go from one side to the other and I can’t blame them for anything.”

“Koné? He is fine but I preferred other players today.”

“Dovbyk’s shortcomings? Now we must not say that we could have done more, we are a team, we make mistakes and we do well together. I am happy with the team.”

“Our objective? To do our best, we are still at the top of the class. We will try to do our best to bring Roma back to the top. I will not give up, I always want the best, like today.”

“Congratulations to Athletic but also to my boys who played a great game.”

“Valverde? He’s a good friend, I gave him my visiting card with my phone number, I had lost his and since he knows so many Spanish players I have to talk to him because his advice could come in handy for us in the summer.”
