In recent years, it has been argued that AC Milan have lacked the financial ambition to match their league ambitions, but this January, that has seemingly changed a little.
Milan spent heavily in the mid-season window, for themselves and in the wider context of the mercato. Bringing in five players is a challenge, and despite two of those deals being permanent, they have had to spend to bring their targets.
Riccardo Sottil’s deal is not as much as the ones for Joao Felix and Kyle Walker, and it is the latter signing that was also a target for Claudio Ranieri’s AS Roma.
In a press conference today, the Italian spoke about his attempt at bringing the Manchester City veteran to Rome and the reason why he was unsuccessful in his bid, and Milan Press have relayed his words.
“I could have taken him [Walker] too. But we didn’t have the money, we couldn’t go over and more importantly, because of the fact of Ryan, we couldn’t get another Englishman.
“We are sailing in a storm, but solid because the Friedkins are solid. I give the OK to the ones they show me, I say if one seems more in line with my needs and what we can spend.”
It is rare that we speak of the Diavolo out-spending on a positive signing, so this news certainly is welcomed.
