There is always something interesting bubbling away behind the scenes at Ibrox as Rangers continue to reshape the squad for the new campaign. With so many names being mentioned and speculation flying around every corner of the transfer window, it is difficult to separate fact from fiction. But what does appear to have more than a grain of substance is the growing connection between Rangers and an emerging Brazilian midfielder currently playing in Switzerland.
The player in question is Metinho, a 22-year-old talent currently on the books at Basel. Rangers’ reported interest in the midfielder has picked up some attention in recent days and it does not seem to be going away. With Russell Martin looking to add energy and power to the middle of the park, this type of signing fits the profile of the younger and more technical players Rangers are believed to be targeting. Further details have emerged suggesting the club are monitoring several midfielders with similar characteristics as they move away from some of the older names that have underperformed in recent years.
Metinho is not just a name plucked from obscurity. The former Fluminense and Troyes player is well regarded for his strength on the ball and intelligent distribution under pressure. He may not have dominated headlines yet but those behind the scenes at Ibrox appear to see the potential for a smart acquisition. His name was also recently mentioned among a number of targets being scouted across the continent. With Basel reportedly open to negotiations at the right price, this could become one of those under-the-radar moves that ends up being a clever bit of business.
Basel’s position is not especially strong either and with Rangers expected to offload a number of squad players this summer, the funds and space could be there for a deal. The Ibrox side are in need of midfield reinforcements and with Champions League qualifiers around the corner, time is of the essence. Whether Metinho becomes the next big arrival in Glasgow remains to be seen but the club’s interest is clearly more than passing curiosity. This latest report confirms the story has weight and it will be fascinating to see how it develops.
