Rangers’ summer transfer spend rises to £16.5M in major statement

If one thing has been noticeable this summer window, it is that Rangers’ spending has been, quite frankly, absolutely normal. Since Steven Gerrard became manager in 2018, Rangers’ summer windows have been consistently spending around about £10 million plus every time. His overall expenditure was around £35 million in those 3.5 years.

His successor, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, albeit it was former sporting director Ross Wilson who actually made all the signings, nevertheless brought in around about £18 million worth of talent. Even if half of the signings hardly worked out, nevertheless a lot of money was spent.

Successor Michael Beale did much the same, this time it was £20 million. It was even more. And if memory escapes you, just recall the £6 million on Dessers, the £6 million on Danilo, the £4 million on Sam Lammers, to name just 3. His successor, of course, eventually, was Philippe Clement. He made big signings as well, spending roughly about £15 million. Not quite the £20 million jackpot, but once again, he signed quite a lot.

And this window again, once more we see figures around about £15–16 million spent. £5 million on Aasgaard, as confirmed by both Sky Sports News and 4Lads. £3.5–4 million on Fernandez, as confirmed by Sky Sports News. £2.5 million on Gasama, as confirmed by all sources. £4.5 million on Cortes, we already knew about that one. And £500K on Joe Rothwell.

So, the fact is, Rangers’ summer windows are spending money. Whether we agree with the club on the targets it has brought in is besides the point for this article. The money has clearly been there. Whether we’re spending much more for Rangers’ summer windows and the rest of the window, time will tell. But it’s abundantly clear that there has been cash there.

Whether we agree, as we say, with the market that Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell are targeting is neither here nor there. But the fact is, the money seems to be there, just like with every previous window. So, one thing is certainly clear, Rangers have had money, they have had cash. So, at least there is a well of lucre there for the manager and sporting director to use.
