It seems Rangers have found themselves in yet another mess of their own making, with the Colombian disaster Óscar Cortés right at the heart of it. The £4.5M obligation-to-buy that former Sporting Director Nils Koppen inexplicably signed off on has now turned into a major problem, with the club desperate to avoid shelling out the fee to Lens this summer.
Let’s be absolutely clear – this is one of the worst bits of business Rangers have been involved in for years. Cortés barely managed a handful of appearances in two injury-ravaged loan spells, and yet someone at the club thought it was a great idea to lock in a guaranteed multi-million-pound purchase. You really couldn’t make it up.
As we covered when Michael Stewart laid into the deal, the pundit rightly called out Rangers for this shocking piece of mismanagement. Cortés, who was touted by Koppen as a future star, has failed on every single level – unfit, unavailable, and frankly not good enough for the Scottish Premiership.
There’s no doubt the club are now actively trying to find a legal or medical loophole to back out of this nightmare. Reports earlier this month suggested Rangers are seeking expert advice to see if the Colombian’s constant injuries could void the obligation. Whether that’s possible or not remains to be seen, but Rangers fans will be hoping the club’s lawyers earn their keep this summer.
Let’s not forget, Rangers already have far too much money wasted on the treatment table. As we highlighted recently, over £17M worth of talent has been sidelined for large spells this season. Adding another £4.5M onto that pile would be utter madness.
According to Football Insider, Rangers are increasingly viewing the deal as a “gamble gone wrong” and are doing everything they can to avoid completing the transfer. Frankly, it’s the only sensible course of action. Rangers cannot afford another penny wasted on players who offer absolutely nothing to the cause.
The board have a massive decision to make here, and for once, they must get it right. Failure to escape this deal would be yet another humiliation for a club that simply can’t afford many more.
