Wycombe Wanderers are closing in on a deal to sign Rangers youngster Alex Lowry.
Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry is closing in on a permanent move to Wycombe Wanderers.
Lowry, 21, has made 14 senior appearances for the Scottish giants, scoring twice. The young midfielder has been prolific for the Rangers B team though, scoring 14 times in 19 outings and also notching three assists.
The Scotland under-21 international also spent time on loan with Hearts of Midlothian last season, where he made 17 appearances and scored one goal. Now, according to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Lowry looks set to make the move to south Buckinghamshire to take the next step in his career.
The exciting midfielder is out of contract in the summer, and the Gers have opted to cash in on him at the final opportunity this January. Lowry will join the managerless League One side, as he looks to help the Chairboys secure promotion to the Championship.
Wycombe were reportedly keen on a move for Walsall's Jamie Jellis this month. The Saddlers star is also out of contract in the summer, and is well-versed with the area, having been born just down the road in Aylesbury. However, the League Two leaders knocked back two bids from the Chairboys, as they remained adamant that the 23-year-old isn't for sale this window.
The failure to secure Jellis has seen Wanderers move for alternative targets, increasing their pursuit of Lowry. The 21-year-old has experienced senior football at the highest level in Scotland and is highly rated in the Scottish youth setup.
Reports last month suggested that Rangers were willing to listen to offers for the 21-year-old, and O'Rourke has now reported that Wycombe are set to offer Lowry a better opportunity for more game time. The attacking midfielder has only featured three times for the Gers this season, all of which came in the Scottish Challenge Cup. However, he certainly put himself in the shop window in these matches by scoring two goals.
With the youngster now at a crossroads in his career where he's too good for the B Team, but not quite at the level to play in the first team yet, now seems like the perfect time to leave Ibrox to continue his development.
To say January has been hectic for Wycombe supporters would be a bit of an understatement. Both Aaron Morley and Caleb Taylor, who played a key part in the early season success, were recalled from their loan spells just days after the window opened. Two weeks later, beloved gaffer Matt Bloomfield left the club he'd had a 21-year affiliation with to fill the vacancy at Luton Town.
Despite this, Wanderers have seriously laid down the gauntlet when it comes to transfers. The Blues have reportedly smashed their transfer record not once but twice, with two exciting new additions. Both Anders Hagelskjaer and Magnus Westergaard arrived in HP12, as a statement of intent from the new ownership.
Now, Lowry looks likely to become Wycombe's fourth addition of the window. The exciting midfielder will come to Adams Park with plenty of pedigree, as his time in Scotland allowed him to catch the eye enough to earn a move to England. With aspirations of international football as well, the 21-year-old will be eager to impress for his new club.
From Wycombe's perspective, signing Lowry now for what will most likely be a cut-price deal is a shrewd piece of business. The Scot looks destined to have a big future and needs a move to an environment which will allow him to thrive. With Wycombe's reputation of turning young players such as Joe Low and Richard Kone into top players, it's certainly an exciting move for both parties.
