Rangers media is slaughtering Philippe Clement for what he said

It’s not often we agree with Philippe Clement these days, especially given the damage Rangers’ manager has done this season to Rangers’ title aspirations, but unlike the other reactionary responses to his modest expectations against Tottenham and Celtic, unfortunately we have to back him up.

Forget Spurs’ results and even position in the Premier League, they just chucked £100M in the summer window at signings and have a squad of a value around £800M, just shy of £1B.

This is not Rangers’ fight, we can barely compete with a lower-PL side, never mind having a real chance against a rich supposedly top-6 side.

So if Rangers get anything on Thursday it’s a magnificent job, but it’s only a bonus.

The one fans are even angrier about is Clement bringing Celtic into the same equation:

“They are totally different kind of games. Maybe we need to say financially out of our league, the two games. We’re going to compete in that way and it’s a really nice challenge for our squad to show themselves in these games and what we can do against those teams.”

He’s right, and while some fansites claim he’s making excuses, both Celtic and Spurs are leagues ahead of us.

Is it defeatist? Maybe to some it is, it’s factually correct – both teams are on a different financial plane to ours, and while we’ve slaughtered so much of what Clement has said and done this season (and earlier this year) we’re not too hard on this one.

He said similar things about Brugge when his then-employers faced Real Madrid, was he being defeatist then too?

If we get anything on Thursday we’ve done incredibly, and we just cross our fingers for a ‘cup final’ type performance at the weekend.
