Without any doubt the biggest social media story lately has been former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and his very pro-Ibrox Instagram post.

In a simple quest for a picture frame containing the Blue Sea of Ibrox lyrics, the ex-Rangers boss has opened a massive can of worms, and stirred the hive for miles.

It all boils down to a massive groundswell response to the post from many Rangers supporters inviting him to return to Govan as manager again as fans wrestle with the directionless mess our club currently is at every level, from board, to management, to players.

Basically, in times of ‘need’, fans do get a bit desperate, for new ownership, players, managers, you name it, and Gerrard’s era at Rangers was, in fairness, the closest thing we’ve had to a Walter figure in Govan.

He wasn’t as good a manager as Walter, but no one is, but Rangers supporters would love to have that kind of figure, a patriarchal leader at the top of the club again, someone everyone can respect.

We did think we had it in Big Phil, with the giant Belgian exuding authority, but it’s all fallen apart for him the past 6+ months.

And he can’t beat Celtic. He can’t even get close. Gerrard did it on his second attempt even if his overall record wasn’t sparkling.

He’s the only manager since Walter to beat Celtic more than once. And to do so in meaningful matches.

Do we want Gerrard back? Well he was far from perfect, and took 3 years to win the title, but no other manager has come close with more money than Gerrard had.

He is probably overall the most important boss we’ve had since Walter, and it’s been a horrible sacking culture since he left.

Would we want him back?

Well who would his assistant be…?
