Aaron Ramsdale insisted that he had been in this situation before and that he would try to motivate young Southampton players for an improved Championship campaign.
Say what you will about Southampton’s on-pitch performance, but off the pitch, their resilience deserves real credit. After all, enduring 2 Premier League relegations within 3 years is not easy being a regular Top Flight club.
But, maybe as they say, "Tough times build tough people", Southampton have only learned it the hard way. See for example the Saints' post-relegation developments.
Impressively, where other fanbases might have withdrawn, the St. Mary's faithful remain loyal to the club. What stands out even more? The way the senior Saints' players have reacted to the Championship drop.
Just days ago, we saw Captain Jack Stephens acknowledge his duty in these challenging times. And now, another experienced Saint has stepped up as part of the squad's leadership response.
Well, he's none other than keeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Having previously endured two consecutive top-flight relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield, Ramsdale knows how it feels as a youngster. And that's what fuels his mission to help the young Saints squad amidst this turbulent time.
In fact, recently, the ex-Arsenal star was seen issuing a rallying cry to the senior Saints’ players to join him in motivating the juniors for the Championship season ahead.
As quoted by the Daily Echo, Ramsdale referenced the young Saints', saying: "Some are experiencing relegation for the first time so there will be a lot of emotions from them over the next few days. The lads who have been here before, we have to try and pick the young boys up."
Now, that's not just seniority, but leadership at its very best. Despite an uncertain Southampton future, Ramsdale has stood firm in his Saints duty, even if only for the seven remaining games.
Still, it's not a short duration though. Even if he’s only here for the final six weeks, Ramsdale could well command a revival as an unofficial leader of Southampton’s dressing room.
